Berry College’s Department of Teacher Education recently welcomed exchange students from Japan, for a two-week intensive.
The seven students and two faculty members came from Setsunan University in Osaka and participated in an intensive on American culture and English language. Last summer, a group of Berry students studied abroad at Setsunan.
“My favorite part of teaching the students has been seeing them grow in confidence with their English language abilities,” said recent graduate Jacelyn Carter, who minored in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). “They have become more comfortable with expressing themselves, starting conversations and asking lots of questions. I believe that this work is so important because it not only promotes intercultural competency but also encourages them to continue engaging with the world around them.” While the exchange students were on campus, they hosted roundtable discussions and a program on manga, anime and Japanese culture. Curtis Chu, assistant professor of international studies at Setsunan, led a workshop on Collaborative Online Interactive Learning in Higher Education at Berry’s Lunch and Learn event.
