Assistant Director of Forensics

Shelby Newland is a Lecturer and the Assistant Director of Forensics in the Communication Department at Berry College. She teaches courses in public speaking and the evolution of mass communication. Her classroom instruction prioritizes community and collaboration, guiding students to develop both confidence and communication skills in a dynamic, transformative learning experience.
Shelby's research focuses on forensics pedagogy, exploring effective teaching strategies within competitive speech and debate. Additionally, she is interested in the role of artificial intelligence in precarious work and organizational communication, particularly how its use in subcontracted and contingent labor--shaped by non-traditional work arrangements like gig work and freelance assignments--affects workers' sense of identification and membership within organizations.
