Berry College students recently took part in the National Model United Nations Conference held in New York City.
Berry’s Model U.N. team represented Greece in the National Model U.N. conference in New York City. Karol Mina Valencia, senior international studies major from Lawrenceville, Ga., and Rico Mora, a freshman history major from Waverly Hall, Ga., received the Outstanding Delegates Award as selected by their peers in the General Assembly First Committee.
Valencia and Mora presented on the following topics, “Countering the Threat Posed by Improvised Explosive Devices” and “Reducing Nuclear Danger.”
Students had the privilege of hearing from a diplomat in Ukraine’s Permanent Mission to the U.N. In their free time, they became the first Berry Model U.N. students to tour to receive a guided tour of the United Nations.
“I am deeply proud of all the delegates from Berry College as their efforts and hard work were greatly recognized within their committees, said Jessica Lowery, Berry president of Model U.N.
The students spent all semester preparing for this trip, researching their committee topics, learning U.N. resolution writing and practicing the rules of procedure that guide formal session. The conference offers unequaled opportunities to interact with students from all over the world to negotiate solutions to global problems.
