Hands On

Want to try on possible careers? Berry’s LifeWorks program lets you test the waters through hands-on professional experiences — and far earlier than you would in a traditional internship.

Culture of Mentorship

Mentorship
Anna Helton '16 | Mentor: Dr. Nadeem Hamid

Faculty, staff, peer mentors, coaches and alumni provide ongoing guidance as you engage in coursework, practical learning experiences, off-campus internships, study abroad opportunities, community engagement experiences and research partnerships — any of which might lead you to discover your calling (and major).

Alum Anna Helton says Berry guided her in exploring different STEM tracks while determining her future career. And faculty support made all the difference. Early on, Associate Professor of Computer Science Nadeem Hamid noticed her aptitude for software development. At the time, Helton thought it was too difficult, but Hamid brushed off her concerns and challenged her to take further courses.

Anna says, “Dr. Hamid encouraged me to keep growing by inviting me to a computer science competition and asking me to be a teaching assistant. In the end, it was also Dr. Hamid who introduced me to my current boss and mentor. I am forever grateful for the role Dr. Hamid has played in both my college experience and professional career.”

Berry Facilities
Delve Into Your Passions

More than 80 student-run clubs and 200 campus events each year mean constant exposure to new ideas. Model UN might lead to study of international business. A walk in the woods could spur an interest in environmental science.

Exploratory Resources

Berry provides guidance and a plan for determining your career path — not just opportunities. Resources include specialized courses, events as well as personal and professional development opportunities.
Introductory Courses + BCC 150

Our foundations curriculum is built to foster exploration across many fields of study. The cornerstone BCC 100 course connects you with faculty and peer mentors to guide you through your first Berry experiences. BCC 150 reinforces self-awareness and professional development.

Major/Career Exploration Week

Each spring, Berry hosts Major and Career Exploration Week — a week of events encouraging students to explore majors, reflect on their goal and to network with peers, alumni and faculty representing different paths.

Professional Development

In addition to gaining experience through the LifeWorks student work program, Berry students have access to professional-level resources, career consultants and assessment tools through the Center for Personal and Professional Development (CPPD).

Life After Berry

Amanda Tomlinson
Amanda Tomlinson '20

On entering Berry, Amanda didn’t have a clear career direction — until an introductory course, close connections with faculty mentors and study abroad fueled her love for environmental science. She went on to graduate school and landed a job with an international consulting firm.
Evan Perry
Evan Perry '21

Evan says he “stumbled upon education” as a career because of his first job at Berry — classroom assistant at Berry College Elementary and Middle School, where students observe and practice teaching in an on-campus lab environment. He is now teaching third grade in Baltimore, Maryland, and loving his career!
Breelan Baxter
Breelan Baxter '21

When Breelan started at Berry, she had no idea about a major, selecting "undeclared.” But a marketing course in the business school plus pivotal LifeWorks positions ignited her interest in event planning. Armed with a double major in marketing and management, she now works as a conference coordinator.
